Bruce was born in Dr. VanArsdale's upstairs office in Montgomery City on March 1, 1955, the son of David Louis and Dorothy Louise Calhoun Powell. Bruce attended New Florence Elementary and graduated from Montgomery County R-II in 1973 where he ran cross-country and made lifelong friends. Bruce also worked for his mom at the Pink Elephant as the evening cook and made a garlic butter sauce that was to die for that he put on his steaks that he fixed on Friday and Saturday nights. He then served customers as an assistant manager at the Save-A-Lot in Montgomery City and later as a night clerk at Abel's in New Florence where he retired. He continued to answer calls to repair TV's or antennas for several older folks in the area. Bruce was also an avid horticulturist.

Bruce dearly loved his family and is survived by siblings: Cathy Nickens, David "Buddy" Powell and Julie, Carrie Kleinsorge, Matt (Ruth) Powell and Chuck (Tammy) Powell; cousin, Pam Mulverhill; aunts, Joyce Shelton and Mildred Oetting; Powell cousins; nieces and nephews, Sheila Thompson, Tara Murray, Brett Nickens, Heather Kelling, Ashley McCrady, and Emily Kleinsorge; grandnieces and nephews; and his beloved dogs Hershey and Cookie.
