Monte Ray Bethel, 82, of Montgomery City, Missouri, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

He was born on January 21, 1944, in New Florence, Missouri, to Kenneth Bethel and Martha (Prior) Bethel.

Monte proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He entered service on August 31, 1961, and was honorably discharged on March 27, 1964. During his time in the Marines, he served with the 3rd Amphibian Tractor Battalion.

Following his military service, Monte spent most of his life working as a truck driver, dedicating many years to the profession before retiring at the age of 75.

Outside of work, Monte found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved mowing and took great pride in maintaining his yard. He had a deep love for animals and was a talented woodworker who enjoyed creating with his hands. Monte especially cherished time spent with family and friends. He looked forward to his wife Judy's Sunday dinners and was well known for hosting fish fries, where good food and fellowship brought everyone together.

Monte is survived by his loving wife, Judy Bethel of the home; his children, Tony Bethel of Danville, Missouri, Cindy Bethel of Berger, Missouri, Teri (Kent) Westhoelter of New Haven, Missouri, and Sherry (Jason) Ussery of Fulton, Missouri; his grandchildren, Brandon Bethel of Texas, Mathew Bethel of Sedalia, Missouri, Niki (Grant) Hopper of Hermann, Missouri, Steven Cox of Rhineland, Missouri, Phillip (Chatney) Cox of Americus, Missouri, Justin (Ericka) Horn of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Karlie (Tyler) Holligan of Bellflower, Missouri, and Kayla Schmidt of Wentzville, Missouri; and his great-grandchildren, Addison Hopper, Weston Hopper, Leighton Hopper, Brooks Hopper, Bo Hopper, Channing Hopper, Ainsley Cox, Anniston Cox, Kalen Ward, Kynlee Horn, Karter Sandoval, Kasynn Sandoval, Tatum Holligan, Leo Holligan, and Stella Holligan.

He is also survived by his siblings, Ronnie (Judy) Bethel of New Florence, Missouri, Carolyn See of Wellsville, Missouri, and Ruthie (Jerry) Schaefer of Rhineland, Missouri; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Bethel of Danville, Missouri.

Monte was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Kenny (Barbara) Bethel and Jim Bethel; his brothers-in-law, Larry See and Russell Huenefeld; sister-in-law, Doris Schaefer; his granddaughter, Tiffany Westhoelter; and his nephews, Tracy Bethel and Gene Schaefer.

Monte will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of family, and the joy he brought to those around him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City, Missouri, with George Prior officiating.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 11:00 AM until the time of the service, at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in the Montgomery City Cemetery.

Casketbearers include Chad Bethel, Tim Bethel, Andy See, Steve See, Jeff Schaefer, and Jason Weeks. Honorary Casketbearers include Clint Bethel and Kale Bethel.
