Jo Ann Stokes, 64, of Auxvasse, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Born on November 18, 1960, in Grand Haven, Michigan, Jo Ann was the daughter of Ray Gene Stewart and Nancy Louise (Tate) Stewart. From a young age, she had a deep connection to animals and the outdoors—a passion that would define much of her life.

Jo Ann married Elmer John Stokes III on July 13, 1991. Their time together was brief but meaningful before his passing in January of 1992. She carried his memory with her always.

A gifted horse trainer, Jo Ann spent many years working with horses, sharing her knowledge and care with both animals and their owners. Her love for nature extended beyond the stables—she enjoyed hunting for arrowheads and spending time outside, even though she had a healthy fear of snakes and an understandable dislike of bugs. None of that ever stopped her from embracing the beauty of the outdoors.

Jo Ann had a quick wit, a vibrant spirit, and a wonderful sense of humor that could lift the hearts of those around her. She was also a devoted animal lover, especially fond of dogs, and they always seemed to find a special friend in her.

She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Jo Ann is survived by her mother, Nancy Stewart; siblings: Audrey Frentzel, Ray Stewart, and Rita Fay Stewart; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer John Stokes III, her father, Ray Gene Stewart, and her sister, Bonnie Stewart.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City, Missouri, with Rev. Michael Hibbard officiating. Casketbearers include Cindy Anderson, Chrissy Stewart, Jennifer Slaughter, Seana Stewart, Carole Weeks, and Brenda Hibbard.

A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 10:30 AM until the time of the service, at the funeral home.
